Gingerbread Houses

On the last Friday before break, the 2nd period AVID class made gingerbread houses as groups. Each group was given a package of graham crackers, a tube of pink frosting, and an assortment of candy to use as decorations. It was up to each group to assemble and decorate their houses.

Here are pictures of each group with their house:

Finally, the entire class squeezed in to get this group photo:

Holiday Cards and Sugar Cookies

On the last Thursday before break, the 1st period AVID class accomplished two things: making holiday cards for a few of their teachers, and decorating sugar cookies to eat. Students worked in groups together on these two tasks, making the cards first and then the cookies. Some cookies turned out well, and others were gone (in the stomachs!) before I could even get there to see the finished work.

Here are a couple of groups working on the holiday cards:

Mandala Essay

A mandala is a circular representation of a person, with symbols about that person within. Students created their own mandalas, and were given the assignment to write an essay explaining both the symbols and the mandala. More information about the assignment can be found on the Savanna HS website.

This assignment is due December 15th or 16th.

Time Managemen Presentations

Students were asked to find articles from online about managing time, and then create a poster from those articles. Students chose strategies from the articles to share with their classmates, and presented that information on posters.

Period 1:

Period 2:

Students did an excellent job on their posters and their presentations.

    Update on Tutorials

The Tutorial process is improving with each period. Students are turning in their questions as they come into the room, and the AVID tutors grade the questions and form groups based on the subject of the questions. Once students get into their tutorial groups, they glue their questions into their spiral notebooks and begin working together.

Students who present their questions explain to their group what they do and do not understand about their questions. Their group then guides them to the answer without just telling them the answer.

At the conclusion of the tutorials, students write a reflection on the concepts they learned, how they learned it, who helped them, and how they can apply that knowledge into their other classes.

Here are some pictures of students working in groups from October 1-2, 2009:
